Now Hiring: Barn Assistant


The Barn Assistant position is critical in ensuring that the mission of High Horses is being achieved through its programs. All tasks must be conducted in a professional manner and in accordance with High Horses’ bylaws, policies, and with PATH International standards. The Barn Assistant serves as an ambassador of High Horses and is active in the day-to-day running of the program, by assuming responsibility in assisting in the care of the horses and facility. The work of the Barn Assistant is overseen by the Facility Manager. This position is part-time.


  • “Hands-on” experience with horses
  • Excellent interpersonal skills

  • Effective written and oral communications skills
  • Experience working with farm equipment (tractor, mower, etc.)
  • Physically fit for the position – the job is physically demanding and requires the ability to lift a minimum of 50 pounds and work outside in all weather.
  • Ability to be flexible – Evenings and weekends required

RESPONSIBILITIES Specific duties include, but are not limited to:
1) Ambassador To The Visiting Public:

Create a welcoming environment for all visitors to the site including riders, parents, volunteers, the Board of Directors, donors, potential donors, PATH International representatives, and the general public.

2) Responsibilities

a. Provide basic care on assigned days for all horses on the property including but not limited to:

i. Implement Feedings following feed charts

ii. Turnout as directed

iii. Stall cleaning

iv. Blanketing/fly masks

v. Watering indoors and out

vi. Communicate any concerns with the horses to the Facility Manager, immediately in case of injury or illness.

b. Maintain cleanliness and organization of barn spaces as they are used

c. Provide assistance to the Facility Manager as needed. May include, but not limited to:

i. Lawn mowing

ii. Shoveling snow

iii. Dragging rings

iv. Fence repair

v. Manure compost maintenance

3) Other Related Responsibilities:

a. Attend meetings with staff as requested

b. Communicate problems, concerns, and incidents to the Facility Manager

c. Serve as a role model of professionalism for others.

Education/or Experience: Have two years prior experience preferred.

Physical Demands: While performing the duties of this Job, the individual is regularly required to stand; walk; use hands to finger, handle, or feel; reach with hands and arms and talk or hear. Occasionally required to stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl. The individual must frequently lift and/or move up to 50 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus.

Work Environment: While working the individual will be subject to outdoor elements, some loud noises, natural dust from the environment, and odors.

Job Type: Part-time

Pay: $12.00 – $15.00 per hour

COVID-19 considerations:
All staff, volunteers, and participants are required to wear masks indoors and when they cannot maintain a 6-foot distance from others. Unvaccinated staff members must get tested weekly.

  • High school or equivalent (Preferred)
