Kindred Spirits

For Adults with a Diagnosis of Dementia

This unmounted program is tailored to the unique needs of each individual participant and their caregiver. Activities will include:

  • Sensory walks focused on observing the sounds, smells, and visuals of the farm and horses

  • breathing exercises to enhance self-awareness and connection with the horses

  • learning how to approach and greet a horse

  • grooming

  • leading horses

  • opportunity to observe or work with horses in a round pen

Working with horses provides a unique opportunity for meaningful activity through a rich sensory experience which enhances quality of life. Potential outcomes include increased self-awareness, joy, sense of self-worth, physical strength and balance, decreased stress, and the opportunity to experience something new.

This program is offered in 30-minute sessions to an individual with a Dementia diagnosis, either with or without a caregiver participating with them.
