Ellie Liota - Herd Assistant

What year did you begin your relationship at High Horses?  I joined team in August 2024.

How did you become involved with High Horses? I had just graduated from cartoon school, and after two years of being hunched over a desk and drawing indoors I was actively looking for a barn job to get me on my feet and outside in the fresh air again. Everybody in my community knew I loved working with horses, and luckily a friend of mine sent me a text with the email listing of High Horses looking for help on the Upper Valley listserve. I applied immediately!

What is your educational background? I went to the University of Vermont for undergrad where I studied Studio Art and Wildlife Biology, and then years later found myself in White River Junction where I recently graduated with a Masters in Cartooning at the Center for Cartoon Studies.

What impact do you see with equine-assisted services? I still feel new to High Horses and equine-assisted services in general, but seeing the care, understanding, and love every person involved in High Horses has for not only the horses, but one another is impactful in itself. I’m so excited to learn more!

Did you grow up around horses? Do you currently have horses? I started riding when I was six years-old and assisted at the barn I rode at for years until I went off to college. It’s been a long time since then, and I don’t have any horses, but would love to get back into the saddle at some point!

Where did you grow up?  I grew up in NYC, but was lucky enough to travel to Upstate New York frequently where I developed a deep love of nature and of riding horses!

What are some of your favorite non-horse or therapy-related hobbies? Animating, drawing, spending time with friends, pretty car rides, looking under logs for bugs, camping, hiking- any spontaneous trips that can turn into a little adventure!

If a horse from High Horses could speak, who are they and what would they say? Gizmo just has Entry of the Gladiators playing in his head on loop.
