Pete Thornton - Property Manager
What year did you begin your relationship at High Horses? I started volunteering in 2017, helping stack hay and clean stalls. In 2019, I was offered a part-time position as a Barn Assistant until the summer of 2021, when I graduated High School and then left for about a year. Then, in August of 2022, I was offered my current position.
How did you become involved with High Horses? I first became involved after my 4-H club was reached out to about volunteering at the barn.
What is your educational background? I have a high school diploma and a Technical Certificate for Diversified Agricultural Technology.
What impact do you see with equine-assisted services? I see our horses making an impact on not only the people who they directly serve, but those surrounding them as well. Changing the pace and scenery for the care and services that a client needs can make it that much easier for them every week and for most, even something to get excited about, which can make a huge difference.
Did you grow up around horses? Do you currently have horses? I grew up with horses. My younger brother and I each had one. I showed with 4-H up until I was 16. Then I let my horse go as I dabbled in other hobbies, thinking I would move away from horses, but you can never really get away. I currently don’t own any horses; however, I do live here on the farm, so I seem to always have a herd right in my backyard.
Where did you grow up? I grew up just a few short miles away in South Royalton, where I lived until I moved onto the farm here in Sharon a couple of years ago.
What are some of your favorite non-horse or therapy-related hobbies? I enjoy tinkering on anything with a motor which can be an expensive hobby but it is always fun to take something apart and put it back together to see if I can make it work.
